6.1

Why We Must Save Water

Even though most of the Earth is covered in water, only a small fraction is fresh water that people, animals, and plants can actually use โ€” most is salty ocean water or locked away in ice.

1

Name two everyday habits that waste water.

Leaving the tap running while brushing teeth, and not fixing a dripping tap (either answer, or similar, is correct)

6.2

Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater harvesting means collecting and storing rainwater instead of letting it run off and go to waste, often by directing roof rainwater into underground tanks or wells.

1

Why is rainwater harvesting especially useful in areas that get very little rain each year?

It stores the limited rain that does fall, so it can be used throughout the dry months instead of being lost

Why it matters โ€” Many old step-wells and tanks across India were built centuries ago specifically to harvest rainwater โ€” this isn't a new idea, but one communities have relied on for generations.
