When the Earth Shook!

What happens during an earthquake, and how do scientists, engineers, and neighbours help a community recover afterward?

๐ŸŒ Chapter 14

14.1

What Happens During an Earthquake

An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground, caused by movement deep inside the Earth. It can damage buildings, roads, and homes, especially in areas not built to withstand shaking.

1

Why can an earthquake cause more damage in a village with weak, poorly-built houses than in one with sturdy houses?

Weak structures are more likely to crack or collapse under the shaking, while sturdy, well-designed buildings can better withstand the forces of an earthquake

14.2

Rebuilding and Helping Each Other

After an earthquake, many different people help a community recover โ€” scientists study which areas are at risk, engineers and architects design safer buildings, and neighbours support each other.

1

Name two kinds of people who might help a village rebuild safely after an earthquake.

Engineers and architects (who design earthquake-resistant buildings) and scientists (who study earthquake risk and warn people) โ€” labourers who help rebuild homes are another example

Exercises

1. What is an earthquake?

2. Why do poorly-built houses tend to suffer more damage in an earthquake than sturdy ones?

3. Name one profession that helps design buildings that can better withstand earthquakes.

4. Why do people in a neighbourhood often help each other during a disaster like an earthquake?

5. Name one group of people who study which areas are more likely to have earthquakes.
