Chapter 11 ยท CBSE Class 5 Maths (NCERT Math-Magic)

Area and its Boundary

Learn to measure a shape's boundary (perimeter) and the space it covers (area), using squares and simple formulas.

๐Ÿก Chapter 11

A rectangle divided into a grid showing area and boundary showing perimeter A 4 by 3 grid of unit squares, with the outer boundary highlighted to show the difference between area (12 squares) and perimeter (14 units) Area = 12 squares Perimeter = 14 units
11.1

Perimeter โ€” Measuring the Boundary

The perimeter is the total length of a shape's boundary โ€” add up the length of every side to find it.

1

A rectangle has length 8 cm and width 5 cm. What is its perimeter?

2 ร— (8 + 5) = 26 cm

2

A square has each side 6 cm. What is its perimeter?

4 ร— 6 = 24 cm

11.2

Area โ€” Measuring the Space Covered

The area tells you how much surface a shape covers, measured in square units. For a rectangle, area = length ร— width.

1

A rectangle has length 7 cm and width 4 cm. What is its area?

7 ร— 4 = 28 square cm

2

A square has each side 5 cm. What is its area?

5 ร— 5 = 25 square cm

Exercises

1. A rectangle has length 10 cm and width 3 cm. What is its perimeter?

2. A square has each side 9 cm. What is its perimeter?

3. A rectangle has length 12 cm and width 6 cm. What is its area?

4. A square has each side 8 cm. What is its area?

5. A garden is 15 m long and 9 m wide. How much fencing is needed to go all the way around it?
