The butterfly method for comparing fractions: cross-multiplying 5/8 and 3/4
7.1

Equivalent Fractions

Two fractions are equivalent if they represent the same amount, even though the numbers look different. Multiplying or dividing both the numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equivalent fraction.

1

Find a fraction equivalent to 1/2 with denominator 8.

4/8 (multiply top and bottom by 4)

2

Simplify 6/9 to its lowest terms.

2/3 (divide top and bottom by 3)

7.2

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

Fractions with the same denominator can be added or subtracted directly. Fractions with different denominators must first be converted to a common denominator.

1

Add: 1/4 + 2/4

3/4

2

Add: 1/2 + 1/3

3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6 (common denominator 6)
