Symmetry

Discover why a butterfly's wings look so perfect — the hidden mathematics of symmetry in nature, art, and shapes.

🪞 Chapter 9

A square folded along its diagonals compared with a paper folded asymmetrically
9.1

Line of Symmetry

A shape has a line of symmetry if it can be folded along that line so both halves match up exactly. Some shapes have one line of symmetry, some have many, and some have none.

1

How many lines of symmetry does an equilateral triangle have?

3

2

How many lines of symmetry does a regular hexagon have?

9.2

Rotational Symmetry

A shape has rotational symmetry if, when spun around its center, it looks exactly the same before completing a full turn. The 'order' of rotational symmetry is how many times it looks the same during one full rotation.

1

A square is rotated around its center. How many times does it look the same during one full turn?

4 times — its order of rotational symmetry is 4

2

The Ashoka Chakra has 24 spokes. What is its order of rotational symmetry?

24
