Arithmetic Expressions

Practice evaluating expressions with multiple operations, following the correct order of operations.

โž• Chapter 2

2.1

Order of Operations

When an expression has several operations, follow this order: brackets first, then division and multiplication (left to right), then addition and subtraction (left to right).

1

Evaluate: 12 + 6 รท 2 โˆ’ 3

6 รท 2 = 3 first, then 12 + 3 โˆ’ 3 = 12

2

Evaluate: (8 + 4) ร— 2 โˆ’ 5

Brackets first: 8+4=12, then 12 ร— 2 = 24, then 24 โˆ’ 5 = 19

2.2

Expressions with Multiple Brackets

When an expression has nested or multiple brackets, work from the innermost bracket outward, simplifying step by step.

1

Evaluate: 2 ร— (3 + (4 โˆ’ 1))

Inner bracket first: 4โˆ’1=3, then 3+3=6, then 2ร—6=12

2

Evaluate: (10 โˆ’ 4) ร— (3 + 2)

10โˆ’4=6, 3+2=5, then 6ร—5=30

Exercises

1. Evaluate: 15 โˆ’ 3 ร— 4 + 2

2. Evaluate: (6 + 2) ร— 3 โˆ’ 4

3. Evaluate: 20 รท (2 + 2) + 5

4. Evaluate: 3 ร— (4 + (6 โˆ’ 2))

5. Evaluate: (9 โˆ’ 3) ร— (5 โˆ’ 2)
