Orienting Yourself: The Use of Coordinates

Learn to specify the location of a point using coordinates, and represent floor plans and layouts on a grid.

๐Ÿ“ Chapter 1

1.1

Specifying Location with Coordinates

A point's location can be described using two numbers โ€” its horizontal and vertical distance from a reference point โ€” written as an ordered pair (x, y).

1

A point is 5 units right and 3 units up from the origin. Write its coordinates.

(5, 3)

2

What are the coordinates of a point that lies exactly on the origin?

(0, 0)

1.2

The Four Quadrants

The plane is divided into four quadrants by the x-axis and y-axis, each with a distinct sign pattern for coordinates.

1

In which quadrant does the point (โˆ’4, 6) lie?

Quadrant II (x negative, y positive)

2

In which quadrant does the point (7, โˆ’2) lie?

Quadrant IV (x positive, y negative)

Practice

Exercises

1. Write the coordinates of a point 6 units left and 2 units down from the origin.

2. In which quadrant does (3, 8) lie?

3. In which quadrant does (โˆ’5, โˆ’9) lie?

4. A floor plan places a table at (4, 2) and a chair at (4, 5). What do they have in common?

5. What is the y-coordinate of any point lying on the x-axis?
