2.1

Recurring Deposit Interest Formula

Interest on a recurring deposit = PƗn(n+1)/2 Ɨ r/(12Ɨ100), where P is monthly instalment, n is number of months, and r is annual rate.

1

Find the interest on a RD of ₹500/month for 12 months at 8% per annum.

I=500Ɨ12Ɨ13/2Ɨ8/(12Ɨ100)=500Ɨ78Ɨ8/1200=₹260

2

Find the maturity value of the above RD.

Total deposit=500Ɨ12=6000; maturity=6000+260=₹6,260

2.2

Recurring Deposit Word Problems

RD problems often require working backward from the maturity value or interest to find the monthly instalment or rate.

1

A person deposits ₹300/month in an RD for 2 years (24 months) at 6% per annum. Find the interest earned.

I=300Ɨ24Ɨ25/2Ɨ6/(12Ɨ100)=300Ɨ300Ɨ6/1200=₹450

2

Find the maturity value for the above RD.

Total deposit=300Ɨ24=7200; maturity=7200+450=₹7,650
