Genetics — Some Basic Fundamentals

Why do tall pea plants sometimes have short offspring? Mendel's experiments uncovered the basic rules of heredity.

🧪 Chapter 3

A Punnett square showing a Tt x Tt monohybrid cross A Punnett square crossing two heterozygous tall pea plants (Tt), producing offspring in a 1 TT : 2 Tt : 1 tt ratio, giving a 3 tall to 1 short phenotype ratio TT Tt Tt tt T t T t Tt × Tt → 1 TT : 2 Tt : 1 tt Phenotype ratio: 3 tall : 1 short
3.1

Mendel's Law of Dominance

When an organism has two different alleles for a trait (heterozygous), the dominant allele's trait is expressed, masking the recessive allele.

1

In pea plants, tall (T) is dominant over short (t). What height will a Tt plant have?

Tall — the dominant T allele masks the recessive t allele

3.2

Using a Punnett Square

A Punnett square predicts the genotypes and phenotypes of offspring from a genetic cross. Crossing two heterozygous (Tt) plants gives a 1:2:1 genotype ratio and a 3:1 phenotype ratio.

1

Cross Tt × Tt using a Punnett square. What genotype ratio results?

1 TT : 2 Tt : 1 tt

2

What phenotype ratio (tall : short) results from a Tt × Tt cross?

3 tall : 1 short
