Chapter 5 · ICSE Class 6 Biology (Selina Concise)

Respiratory System

Learn how we breathe, the path air takes into our lungs, and the process of gas exchange.

🫁 Chapter 5

The path air takes into the lungs A simplified diagram showing air entering through the nose, traveling down the windpipe, and branching into two lungs Windpipe Lungs
5.1

The Pathway of Breathing

Air enters through the nose, travels down the trachea (windpipe), into the bronchi, and finally into the lungs.

1

What is the windpipe also called?

The trachea

2

What are the two tubes that branch off the trachea into the lungs called?

The bronchi

5.2

Gas Exchange

In tiny air sacs called alveoli, oxygen passes into the blood and carbon dioxide passes out of the blood, to be exhaled.

1

Where does gas exchange happen in the lungs?

In the alveoli (tiny air sacs)

2

What gas do we breathe in, and what gas do we breathe out?

We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide
