Chapter 6 ยท ICSE Class 6 Physics (Selina Concise)

Magnetism

Explore magnets, their properties, magnetic and non-magnetic materials, and how magnetic poles interact.

๐Ÿงฒ Chapter 6

A bar magnet with north and south poles and its magnetic field lines A bar magnet with a red north pole labeled N and a blue south pole labeled S, with curved field lines looping from the north pole around to the south pole N S
6.1

Properties of Magnets

A magnet has two poles (north and south). Like poles repel each other, and unlike poles attract each other.

1

What happens when you bring two north poles of magnets close together?

They repel (push away from) each other

2

What happens when you bring a north pole and a south pole close together?

They attract (pull toward) each other

6.2

Magnetic and Non-Magnetic Materials

Magnetic materials (like iron, nickel, cobalt) are attracted to magnets. Non-magnetic materials (like wood, plastic, glass) are not attracted.

1

Is a steel paperclip magnetic or non-magnetic?

Magnetic, since steel contains iron

2

Is a plastic ruler magnetic or non-magnetic?

Non-magnetic

Practice

Exercises

1. How many poles does a magnet have? Name them.

2. Do like poles attract or repel?

3. Do unlike poles attract or repel?

4. Name two magnetic materials.

5. Name two non-magnetic materials.
