Metals and Non-metals

Compare the properties of metals and non-metals, and learn how to distinguish them based on physical characteristics.

๐Ÿ”ฉ Chapter 6

Properties of metals compared with non-metals A table comparing metals and non-metals: metals are shiny, good conductors, and malleable; non-metals are dull, poor conductors, and brittle Metals Non-Metals Shiny (lustrous) Dull Good conductors Poor conductors Malleable Brittle
6.1

Properties of Metals

Metals are generally shiny (lustrous), good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable (can be hammered into sheets), and ductile (can be drawn into wires).

1

Why is copper used for electrical wiring?

Because it's a good conductor of electricity and is ductile, so it can be drawn into thin wires

2

What does it mean for a metal to be malleable?

It can be hammered or pressed into thin sheets without breaking

6.2

Properties of Non-metals

Non-metals are generally dull (not shiny), poor conductors of heat and electricity, and brittle in solid form.

1

Why is sulfur classified as a non-metal?

It's dull in appearance, doesn't conduct electricity well, and is brittle rather than malleable

2

Name a non-metal that is an exception โ€” good conductor of electricity.

Graphite (a form of carbon)

Practice

Exercises

1. Name two properties of metals.

2. Name two properties of non-metals.

3. What does 'ductile' mean?

4. Is carbon (graphite) a metal or non-metal, despite conducting electricity?

5. Give an example of a metal used in everyday life.
