Chapter 21 ยท ICSE Class 7 Mathematics

Data Handling

Organize and summarize data using mean, median, and mode, and read bar graphs to draw conclusions.

Mean, Median, and Mode

The mean is the average โ€” add all values and divide by how many there are. The median is the middle value when data is arranged in order. The mode is the value that occurs most often.

1

Find the mean of 4, 8, 6, 10, 12.

(4+8+6+10+12) รท 5 = 40 รท 5 = 8

2

Find the median of 3, 7, 2, 9, 5.

Arrange in order: 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 โ€” the middle value is 5

Interpreting Bar Graphs

A bar graph shows data using bars of different heights. Comparing bar heights lets you quickly identify the highest, lowest, and how values relate to each other.

1

A bar graph shows rainfall: June 80mm, July 120mm, August 60mm. Which month had the least rainfall?

August, with 60mm

2

In the same graph, how much more rain fell in July than August?

120 โˆ’ 60 = 60mm more

Practice

Exercises

1. Find the mean of 5, 9, 7, 11, 13.

2. Find the median of 8, 3, 12, 5, 9.

3. Find the mode of 4, 6, 4, 8, 4, 9.

4. A bar graph shows book sales: Monday 15, Tuesday 25, Wednesday 10. Which day sold the most?

5. In the same graph, what is the total number of books sold across all three days?
