Symmetry (Including Reflection and Rotation)

Go beyond simple line symmetry to explore reflection and rotational symmetry in shapes and patterns.

🪞 Chapter 17

A shape with a vertical line of symmetry dividing it into two mirror-image halves A butterfly-like shape with a dashed vertical line down the middle, showing that the left half is a mirror image of the right half Line of symmetry
17.1

Reflection (Line) Symmetry

A shape has reflection symmetry if it can be folded along a line so both halves match exactly — like a mirror image. That fold line is the axis of symmetry.

1

How many lines of symmetry does a rectangle (not a square) have?

2 — one horizontal, one vertical

2

Does a scalene triangle (all sides different) have any lines of symmetry?

No, since no fold line would make the two halves match

17.2

Rotational Symmetry

A shape has rotational symmetry if it looks the same after being rotated by some angle less than a full 360° turn around its center. The order of rotational symmetry is how many times it matches during one full rotation.

1

What is the order of rotational symmetry of an equilateral triangle?

3, since rotating by 120° three times brings it back to matching positions

2

Does the letter 'S' have rotational symmetry? If so, what order?

Yes, order 2 — rotating it 180° makes it look the same
