Chapter 6 · ICSE Class 8 Biology (Selina Concise)

The Circulatory System

Deepen your understanding of the heart's structure, blood vessels, and the composition of blood.

❤️ Chapter 6

The heart pumping blood through arteries and veins A simplified diagram of the heart with blood flowing out through arteries to the body and returning through veins, forming the circulatory system Heart Arteries (oxygen-rich) Veins (returns blood)
6.1

Structure of the Heart

The heart has four chambers: two atria (upper) and two ventricles (lower), which pump blood through the body in a double circulation system.

1

How many chambers does the human heart have?

Four — two atria and two ventricles

2

What is 'double circulation'?

Blood passes through the heart twice per complete circuit — once to the lungs and once to the body

3

Why does the heart need two separate sides (left and right) rather than just one pump?

The right side pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, while the left side pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body, keeping the two blood supplies separate for efficiency

6.2

Composition of Blood

Blood consists of plasma (liquid part), red blood cells (carry oxygen), white blood cells (fight infection), and platelets (help clotting).

1

What component of blood carries oxygen?

Red blood cells

2

What component of blood helps blood clot after an injury?

Platelets

3

What is the liquid part of blood called, and what does it carry?

Plasma; it carries blood cells, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body
