Explore polygons in depth — their angle sums, and the special rules for regular polygons.
The sum of interior angles of a polygon with n sides is (n−2) × 180°. This works for any polygon, no matter how irregular its shape.
Find the sum of interior angles of a pentagon (5 sides).
(5−2) × 180° = 3 × 180° = 540°
Find the sum of interior angles of a hexagon (6 sides).
(6−2) × 180° = 4 × 180° = 720°
In a regular polygon, all sides and all angles are equal. Each interior angle can be found by dividing the total angle sum by the number of sides: (n−2) × 180° ÷ n.
Find each interior angle of a regular hexagon.
(6−2) × 180° ÷ 6 = 720° ÷ 6 = 120°
Find each interior angle of a regular octagon.
(8−2) × 180° ÷ 8 = 1080° ÷ 8 = 135°
