Chapter 23 ยท ICSE Class 9 Mathematics (Selina Concise)

Co-ordinate Geometry

Plot points on the Cartesian plane, and understand the four quadrants and their sign conventions.

๐Ÿ“ Chapter 23

Points plotted on a coordinate plane A coordinate plane with x and y axes, showing three points plotted at their coordinates: (3,4), (-2,3), and (-3,-2) (3,4) (-2,3) (-3,-2) x y
23.1

The Cartesian Plane and Quadrants

The Cartesian plane is divided into four quadrants by the x-axis and y-axis. Quadrant I has both coordinates positive, and the signs change as you rotate counterclockwise.

1

Which quadrant does the point (3, โˆ’4) lie in?

Quadrant IV (x positive, y negative)

2

Which quadrant does the point (โˆ’5, โˆ’2) lie in?

Quadrant III (both negative)

23.2

Plotting and Identifying Points

A point (x, y) is plotted by moving x units horizontally and y units vertically from the origin.

1

Plot the point (4, 0). Where does it lie?

On the positive x-axis, since y=0

2

Plot the point (0, โˆ’6). Where does it lie?

On the negative y-axis, since x=0

Practice

Exercises

1. Which quadrant does (โˆ’2, 7) lie in?
