Chapter 14 · ICSE Class 9 Mathematics (Selina Concise)

Construction of Polygons

Learn to construct regular polygons and quadrilaterals accurately using only a ruler and compass.

📐 Chapter 14

Constructing a regular hexagon using a compass A regular hexagon inscribed in a circle, showing how a compass set to the circle's radius can step around the circumference six times to construct the hexagon's vertices Step the compass around the circle 6 times
14.1

Calculating Angles for Construction

Before constructing a regular polygon, its interior angle is calculated using (n−2)×180°/n, which guides the compass and ruler work.

1

Find the interior angle of a regular hexagon before constructing it.

(6−2)×180°/6=720°/6=120°

2

Find the interior angle of a regular pentagon.

(5−2)×180°/5=540°/5=108°

14.2

Constructing Quadrilaterals

A quadrilateral can be constructed using a diagonal to split it into two triangles, each built from known side and angle measurements.

1

To construct a parallelogram, what measurements are typically sufficient?

Two adjacent sides and the included angle, since opposite sides and angles can be derived from parallelogram properties

2

Why is a diagonal useful when constructing an irregular quadrilateral?

It splits the quadrilateral into two triangles, each of which can be constructed using standard triangle construction methods
