Chapter 20 · ICSE Class 9 Mathematics (Selina Concise)

Solids [Surface Area & Volume]

Calculate the surface area and volume of cubes, cuboids, and cylinders, and apply them to real containers and structures.

📦 Chapter 20

A cube with its edge length labeled A cube drawn in 3D with one edge labeled s, used to illustrate surface area and volume formulas s Volume = s³
20.1

Cube and Cuboid Formulas

Cuboid volume=l×b×h, surface area=2(lb+bh+hl). For a cube with side a: volume=a³, surface area=6a².

1

Find the volume and surface area of a cuboid 8cm×5cm×4cm.

Volume=160 cm³; SA=2(40+20+32)=2×92=184 cm²

2

Find the volume of a cube with side 6 cm.

6³=216 cm³

20.2

Cylinder Formulas

Cylinder volume=πr²h, curved surface area=2πrh, total surface area=2πr(r+h).

1

Find the volume of a cylinder with radius 7 cm and height 10 cm (π=22/7).

22/7×49×10=1540 cm³

2

Find the curved surface area of a cylinder with radius 5 cm and height 12 cm (π=3.14).

2×3.14×5×12=376.8 cm²
