A decimal is another way to write a fraction whose denominator is 10, 100, or 1000. Drag the sliders and watch the grid fill up โ that's a decimal, one hundredth at a time.
Try it: set Tenths to 5 and Hundredths to 0 โ that's exactly half the grid.
Sometimes a quantity isn't a whole number โ like โน4 and 50 paise, or 1 metre and 42 centimetres. A decimal uses a dot (the decimal point) to show the whole-number part and the fraction part together. The first digit after the point is the tenths place (out of 10 equal parts), and the second digit is the hundredths place (out of 100 equal parts).
Decimals with the same number of digits after the point.
Decimals with a different number of digits after the point.
A whole number plus a decimal part โ like a mixed number written differently.
Compare digit by digit, place value by place value. 0.45 is bigger than 0.42 because in the hundredths place, 5 > 2.
Make them like decimals first, by adding zeros โ this doesn't change the value. To compare 0.6 and 0.45 โ write 0.6 as 0.60. Now 0.60 is clearly bigger than 0.45.
Priya bought a pen for โน45.50 and a bag for โน12.75. How much did she spend in total?
45.50 + 12.75 = 58.25 โ she spent โน58.25.
3.45 or 3.5? Line up the decimal points: 3.45 vs 3.50.
3.5 is bigger.
Subtract 2.35 from 5.6. Write 5.6 as 5.60 so both numbers have two decimal places.
5.60 โ 2.35 = 3.25
