Answers & Worked Solutions

Check your paper, then read the solutions for the questions you missed.

Section A — Multiple Choice Questions (10 marks)
Q1. B. evaporation

Water evaporates and leaves the dissolved salt behind.

Q2. C. mitochondrion

Mitochondria release energy from food during respiration (ATP formation).

Q3. B. Xylem

Xylem conducts water and minerals from roots to leaves; phloem carries food.

Q4. B. 5 m/s

Speed = distance/time = 150/30 = 5 m/s.

Q5. C. 12 N

F = ma = 4 × 3 = 12 N.

Q6. C. 9 J

KE = ½mv² = ½ × 2 × 9 = 9 J.

Q7. C. ultrasound

Ultrasound has frequency above 20 kHz, beyond the range of human hearing.

Q8. B. 18

Neutrons = mass number − atomic number = 35 − 17 = 18.

Q9. C. Distilled water

Distilled water has a single fixed composition; the others are mixtures.

Q10. B. mass

Inertia is the resistance to change of motion and is measured by mass.

Section B — Fill in the Blanks & True / False (8 marks)
Q11. cell

All living organisms are made of cells.

Q12. cellulose

Cellulose gives the plant cell wall its rigidity.

Q13. True

It contains the chromosomes (DNA), which carry hereditary information.

Q14. joule

1 J = 1 N × 1 m.

Q15. False

Sound is a mechanical wave and needs a material medium.

Q16. nucleus

Most of the atom’s mass and all its positive charge lie in a tiny central nucleus.

Q17. connective

Blood connects and transports substances through the body.

Q18. True

Its composition is uniform throughout.

Section C — Short Answer Questions (16 marks)
Q19. Uniform vs non-uniform composition
  1. A homogeneous mixture has uniform composition throughout, e.g. salt dissolved in water.
  2. A heterogeneous mixture has non-uniform composition with visible parts, e.g. sand and water.
Q20. 11 protons, 12 neutrons
  1. Protons = atomic number = 11.
  2. Neutrons = 23 − 11 = 12.
Q21. Protection; controls entry and exit of substances
  1. It encloses the cell and gives it protection.
  2. It is selectively permeable, so it controls which substances enter and leave the cell.
Q22. 100 J
  1. Work = force × displacement in the direction of force.
  2. W = 20 × 5 = 100 J.
Q23. A body stays at rest or in uniform motion unless an external force acts
  1. A body continues in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line unless an unbalanced external force acts on it.
  2. Example: passengers lurch forward when a moving bus brakes suddenly.

  1. a = (v − u)/t.
  2. a = (20 − 0)/10 = 2 m/s².
Q25. 17 m
  1. Sound must travel to the surface and back in 0.1 s: total distance = 340 × 0.1 = 34 m.
  2. Distance to the surface = 34/2 = 17 m.
