Answers & Worked Solutions

Check your paper, then read the solutions for the questions you missed.

Section A — Multiple Choice Questions (10 marks)
Q1. B. metre

The metre (m) is the SI base unit of length.

Q2. C. Chloroplast

Chloroplasts hold chlorophyll and are present only in plant cells.

Q3. C. heart

The heart pumps blood through the blood vessels.

Q4. B. 21%

Air is roughly 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen.

Q5. B. magnet

Iron is attracted by a magnet; sand is not.

Q6. C. 100 °C

The boiling point of water is 100 °C (212 °F).

Q7. B. lever

A seesaw turns about a fixed point (fulcrum), so it is a lever.

Q8. C. The Sun

A luminous object gives out its own light; the Sun does.

Q9. B. repel

Like poles repel and unlike poles attract.

Q10. B. Liquid

A liquid takes the shape of its container but keeps its volume.

Section B — Fill in the Blanks & True / False (8 marks)
Q11. chlorophyll

Chlorophyll absorbs light energy for photosynthesis.

Q12. True

For example, squeezing a sponge or stretching a rubber band.

Q13. ovary

After fertilisation the ovary becomes the fruit and ovules become seeds.

Q14. False

Air is a mixture of gases.

Q15. Na

From its Latin name, natrium.

Q16. kilogram

Symbol: kg.

Q17. False

Like poles repel; unlike poles attract.

Q18. arteries

Veins bring blood back to the heart.

Section C — Short Answer Questions (16 marks)
Q19. Anything with mass that occupies space
  1. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
  2. Examples: water, air, wood, iron.
Q20. Filtration; evaporation
  1. Sand and water: filtration (or decantation).
  2. Salt from salt solution: evaporation of the water.
Q21. 3
  1. Mechanical advantage = effort arm / load arm.
  2. MA = 60/20 = 3.
Q22. 2500 m
  1. 1 km = 1000 m.
  2. 2.5 × 1000 = 2500 m.
Q23. Cell wall and chloroplasts only in plant cells
  1. Plant cells have a cell wall; animal cells do not.
  2. Plant cells contain chloroplasts and a large vacuole; animal cells do not (or have small vacuoles).
Q24. Gas exchange and loss of water vapour
  1. Stomata are tiny pores that let carbon dioxide in and oxygen out.
  2. They also let water vapour escape (transpiration).
Q25. H₂O: two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom
  1. The formula of water is H₂O.
  2. Each molecule has 2 hydrogen atoms joined to 1 oxygen atom.
Q26. It reflects sunlight
  1. The Moon has no light of its own.
  2. It reflects sunlight towards the Earth, so we see it.
Section D — Problem Solving (16 marks)
Q27. (a) 20 m² (b) 60 m³ (c) 54 m²
  1. (a) Floor area = 5 × 4 = 20 m².
  2. (b) Volume = 5 × 4 × 3 = 60 m³.
  3. (c) Four walls = 2 × (5 + 4) × 3 = 54 m².
Q28. (a) 40 N (b) 3
  1. Principle of moments: effort × effort arm = load × load arm.
  2. (a) Effort × 60 = 120 × 20 = 2400, so effort = 40 N.
  3. (b) MA = load/effort = 120/40 = 3 (also 60/20 = 3).
