Weather and Seasons

Weather changes every day, but seasons follow a yearly pattern. Tap a season to explore its weather and how we live differently through it.

Try it: compare Summer and Winter โ€” opposite temperatures need opposite clothing!

What is weather?

Weather is the day-to-day condition of the air around us โ€” how hot or cold it is, whether it's sunny, cloudy, rainy, or windy. Weather can change quickly, sometimes even within the same day.

Everyday example โ€” You might wake up to a sunny morning and see dark clouds and rain by the afternoon โ€” that quick change is weather, not a change of season.
11.2

What are seasons?

A season is a longer period of the year with a typical pattern of weather that repeats yearly. In India, we usually experience five seasons: Summer, Monsoon (rainy season), Autumn, Winter, and Spring.

Summer
Hot & Dry

Long, sunny days with high temperatures.

Monsoon
Wet & Humid

Heavy rainfall that fills rivers and helps crops grow.

Winter
Cold & Dry

Short days with low temperatures, sometimes foggy.

Measuring the weather

1Thermometer

Measures the temperature of the air, telling us how hot or cold it is.

2Rain gauge

Measures the amount of rainfall that has fallen in a place.

3Wind vane

Shows the direction the wind is blowing from.

How seasons affect our lives

Seasons influence the clothes we wear, the food we eat, and the activities we do. We wear light cotton clothes in summer and warm woollens in winter, and farmers plan their crops around the monsoon rains.

Watch out โ€” Don't confuse weather with climate โ€” weather is what's happening right now or today, while a season describes the general pattern of weather over weeks or months.
