Chapter 13 ยท CBSE Class 5 EVS (NCERT Looking Around)

A Shelter so High!

Travel from Mumbai to the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, and discover why breathing gets harder โ€” and homes look different โ€” the higher you go.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Chapter 13

13.1

Why Breathing Gets Harder at High Altitude

As you go higher up a mountain, the air has less oxygen in it, which is why travellers often find it harder to breathe normally at high altitudes, like in parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

1

Why did a traveller in the mountains say, 'This place is so high that it is difficult to breathe normally'?

Because the air at high altitude contains less oxygen than at sea level, making it harder for the body to get enough oxygen with each breath

13.2

Shelters in Mountain Regions

People in high mountain regions build homes suited to their surroundings โ€” some on steep slopes, some with wood and stone designs, and some that are even portable and can be carried from place to place.

1

Why might people in some mountain regions use portable shelters that can be packed up and carried?

Because some mountain communities move with the seasons (for example, to find grazing land for animals), so a portable shelter lets them take their home with them
