1.1

Reading and Writing Large Numbers

Large numbers are easier to read when we break them into groups โ€” ones, thousands, and lakhs. Each digit's place tells us its value.

1

Write 45,672 in words.

Forty-five thousand six hundred seventy-two

2

Write "Three lakh twelve thousand" in figures.

3,12,000

1.2

Estimating and Rounding Off

Sometimes we don't need the exact number โ€” a close estimate is enough. To round to the nearest hundred, look at the tens digit: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 rounds down.

1

Round off 3,456 to the nearest hundred.

3,500

2

Round off 2,340 to the nearest thousand.

2,000
