Multiplying by Breaking Numbers Apart

A big multiplication becomes easier when you break one number into smaller, friendlier parts, multiply each part separately, and add the results together.

1

Find 23 × 6 by breaking 23 into 20 and 3.

(20 × 6) + (3 × 6) = 120 + 18 = 138

2

Find 45 × 4 by breaking 45 into 40 and 5.

(40 × 4) + (5 × 4) = 160 + 20 = 180

Ways to Divide

Division can be thought of as repeated subtraction, or as sharing equally into groups. Long division organizes this sharing step by step, one digit at a time.

1

Find 84 ÷ 4 using repeated subtraction in groups of 4.

84 − 4 subtracted 21 times reaches 0, so 84 ÷ 4 = 21

2

Find 96 ÷ 8.

96 ÷ 8 = 12
