4.1

Organs of the Digestive System

Food travels through the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, with each organ playing a role in digestion and absorption.

1

Where does digestion begin?

In the mouth, where chewing and saliva start breaking down food

2

What organ absorbs most of the digested nutrients into the blood?

The small intestine

4.2

The Process of Digestion

Digestion breaks down large food molecules into smaller, absorbable nutrients using mechanical (chewing) and chemical (enzymes) processes.

1

What is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach called?

The oesophagus

2

What happens to undigested food in the large intestine?

Water is absorbed from it, and the remaining waste is formed into faeces for elimination
