Decimal Fractions (Decimals)

Master all four operations with decimals, and learn to convert confidently between decimals and fractions.

🎯 Chapter 4

Dividing decimals by shifting the decimal point to make a whole number divisor The division 4.8 divided by 0.4, shown by shifting both decimal points one place to the right to get the equivalent whole-number division 48 divided by 4, giving 12 4.8 ÷ 0.4 Shift both decimal points 1 place right = 48 ÷ 4 = 12

Adding, Subtracting, and Multiplying Decimals

When adding or subtracting decimals, line up the decimal points first. When multiplying decimals, ignore the decimal points, multiply as whole numbers, then count the total decimal places in both numbers to place the decimal point in the answer.

1

Find: 12.75 + 3.6

16.35

2

Find: 2.4 × 1.3

24 × 13 = 312, with 2 total decimal places → 3.12

Dividing Decimals and Converting to Fractions

To divide by a decimal, multiply both numbers by a power of 10 to make the divisor a whole number, then divide normally. To convert a decimal to a fraction, write it over the matching power of 10 and simplify.

1

Find: 6.4 ÷ 0.8

64 ÷ 8 = 8

2
