Chapter 5 · ICSE Class 7 Mathematics

Exponents (including Laws of Exponents)

Learn to write repeated multiplication compactly using exponents, and master the laws that make working with them easy.

⚡ Chapter 5

The law of exponents for multiplying powers with the same base The rule a to the power m times a to the power n equals a to the power m plus n, with the worked example 2 cubed times 2 to the 4th equals 2 to the 7th equals 128 aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ 2³ × 2⁴ = 2⁷ = 128
5.1

What Are Exponents?

An exponent tells you how many times a number (the base) is multiplied by itself. In 2⁴, 2 is the base and 4 is the exponent, meaning 2 × 2 × 2 × 2.

1

Write 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 using exponents.

3⁵

2

Evaluate 2⁴.

2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16

5.2

Laws of Exponents

When multiplying powers with the same base, add the exponents. When dividing powers with the same base, subtract the exponents. When raising a power to another power, multiply the exponents.

1

Simplify: 2³ × 2⁴

2³⁺⁴ = 2⁷ = 128

2

Simplify: (3²)³

3²ˣ³ = 3⁶ = 729
