Chapter 6 · ICSE Class 7 Mathematics

Ratio and Proportion (Including Sharing in a Ratio)

Compare quantities using ratios, check whether ratios form a proportion, and split amounts fairly according to a given ratio.

⚖️ Chapter 6

Sharing 600 rupees among three people in the ratio 2 to 3 to 5 600 rupees divided into 10 equal parts, with three people receiving 2, 3, and 5 parts respectively, giving them 120, 180, and 300 rupees 2 parts ₹120 3 parts ₹180 5 parts ₹300 ₹600 shared in ratio 2 : 3 : 5
6.1

Understanding Ratio

A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind. It's written as a:b, and can be simplified by dividing both parts by their common factor, just like a fraction.

1

Simplify the ratio 18:24.

Divide both by 6 → 3:4

2

A class has 15 boys and 20 girls. What is the ratio of boys to girls in simplest form?

15:20 = 3:4

6.2

Sharing an Amount in a Given Ratio

To split an amount in a given ratio, add the parts of the ratio to find the total number of shares, then divide the amount by that total to find the value of one share.

1

Share ₹600 between A and B in the ratio 2:3.

Total parts = 5, one part = ₹120, so A gets ₹240 and B gets ₹360

2

Divide 45 sweets between two children in the ratio 4:5.

Total parts = 9, one part = 5 sweets, so they get 20 and 25 sweets
