Fractions (Including Problems)

Strengthen your fraction skills with all four operations, and apply them to real-world word problems.

๐Ÿฐ Chapter 3

Adding fractions with different denominators, 2/3 plus 1/4 Adding 2/3 and 1/4 by first converting to a common denominator of 12, giving 8/12 plus 3/12 equals 11/12 2/3 + 1/4 Common denominator: 12 = 8/12 + 3/12 = 11/12

Operations with Fractions

Adding and subtracting fractions requires a common denominator. Multiplying fractions means multiplying numerators and denominators directly. Dividing means multiplying by the reciprocal.

1

Find: 2/3 + 1/6

4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6

2

Find: 3/4 รท 1/2

3/4 ร— 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2

Fraction Word Problems

Word problems often describe parts of a whole. Reading carefully to identify what operation is needed โ€” combining, comparing, or splitting โ€” is the key first step.

1

A recipe needs 3/4 cup of flour, and you want to make 1/2 the recipe. How much flour is needed?

3/4 ร— 1/2 = 3/8 cup

2

A tank is 5/6 full. If 1/3 of the tank's capacity is used, how much is left?

5/6 โˆ’ 1/3 = 5/6 โˆ’ 2/6 = 3/6 = 1/2 full
